Who is ORLAN?

ORLAN is an artist with a worldwide reputation for creating various works. She has a French origin and creates sculptures, videogames, photograph's and performances. She was born in Mireille Porte on 1947 30th May. What makes her unique is the use of biogenetic and surgery techniques to make her presentations.

She is known for making her body presentation which makes part of support to her works. Her expertise and recognition breakthrough was in canal art, which gave her a better definition. To understand ORLAN better, we need to go through some facts about her life events.

  1. Artistic Works

ORLAN is widely known for various artistic presentations. Changing her body's presentation is the reason she is widely known. The integral part of her work was commitment and liberty, as she defends all she does. She stands by her work as it is innovative and gives an actual presentation of what she wants.

ORLAN constantly changes to capture the attention of her followers. It only takes a short time to make changes that bring a complete disruption of religion, supremacy, racism, domination forms, and many more.

  1. Early Works

ORLAN'S career began in 1964, where she started performances in her hometown. Saint-Etienne is where she did her first slow-motion walks as she would go through the central city parts.

Mesu Rages came along in 1965, of which she used her body as a measuring instrument. She determined the number of people to fit within an architectural place using her body. From there, she has been an active participant in artwork and presentations.

Between 1964 and 1966, she released the vintage series comprised of black and white images. None of the negatives can be traced except one. Between 1967-1975 she did the tableaux vivants composed of baroque artists and used prison inmates as models.

In 1971 she called herself Sainte-ORLAN, where she adorned herself with white leatherette and black vinyl. Her photographs were later used as photo collages and films making a very attractive hagiography. Another event happened in 1977with the FIAC International-Contemporary Art Fair in Paris with the Artists Kiss. It was later turned into a slot machine in Grand Palais, and spectators would insert a coin to win lots of cash as a kiss from the artist.

In 1978 she founded the Lyon International Symposium of Performance which had several new technologies. In 1982 she did the first online art on the magazine with Frederick Develay. The formation of the software's also begun in the period until the 1990s.

Her first surgery was in 1993 in New York and was conducted on her eyebrows. She did analogous horns on her forehead.

ORLAN did self –hybridizations towards the end of the 1990s. She used digital photography and computer graphics to change her face making it look beautiful with various beauty canons. In 1999 she got an appointment as a teacher at Ecole Nationale arts in France.

  1. Reincarnation Of Sainte-ORLAN

During the reincarnation, ORLAN did a series of plastic surgeries, which started in 1990. She transformed her body into various famous sculptures and paintings of women. The carnal artworks are broadcast and filmed in various institutions all over the world.

Her surgeries were from the characters and did a portrayal of the stories they associate with. Cosmetic surgery keeps shifting and differing depending on the situation. ORLAN calls it nomadic mutant, as it changes depending on what she wants to show and how she wants it done.

  1. In The 2000s

There are several works she did in the 2000s with regard to carnal art. Up to date, some works are still ongoing. Le Plan Du film is a series ORLAN did in 2001 and had various artists and writers. It had several film posters that were very attractive to many people.

In 2008 she collaborated with symbioticA laboratory located in Australia. The result was a bio-art installation that was called The Harlequins Coat. There are still ongoing works such as Recycle/Hybridize/Suture, a series with its origin from the ORLANS wardrobe. It involves making new clothing's from the existing ones.

In 2013 there was a challenge between Lady Gaga and ORLAN following a video she did that seemed to imitate ORLAN. She filed a complaint that was heard in 2016 and finalized in 2018. She wanted compensation of $31.7 million, which ended in rejection as there were no signs of parasitism in the video.

In 2018 ORLAN created a robot called ORLANoide, which was of her image. It is part of her performance as it had some intelligence to read texts and speak her voice. The robot was presented for an exhibition in Grand Palais under the section of artists and robots.

In 2019 she got an award for the woman of the year. Prince Monte Carlo gave the award. After that, she got an appointment as Professor-Emeritus of academia in Rome. She did her autobiography and published it with Gallimard in 2020.

  1. Public Commisions

ORLAN has done some works with the public commissions. She has worked with the Medical School- Nantes University, located in France. Under the same institution, she did installations at the Medical Library. The works have been perfect for her marketing.

Still, ORLAN is reinventing her body by doing various surgeries to meet her needs at his age. Her continued improvements have been instrumental in the achievement of many awards and honors.
